30 Diner Lingo You Should Know For The Sake Of It

Not knowing a diner lingo definitely won’t put you on a tough spot (hopefully), but knowing them is better anyway. Afterall, who doesn’t like to be a “know it all?” Diners have their own language for some menu items, it’s sort of like jazzing up the food a bit with a cool sounding name. Some have been passed along by our forefathers and some recently invented. Whether you are heading to a diner to hang out with your friends or entertaining a client, using one of these cool diner lingo may not help you land a job, but will definitely make you sound cool.

Here are 30 diner lingo that I can think of at the moment.

  1. Eve with a lid : A piece of apple pie
  2. Hug one : A glass of orange juice
  3. A Blonde with sand : Coffee with cream and sugar
  4. A white cow : A vanilla milkshake
  5. Let it walk : It’s to go
  6. An M.D : A Dr. Pepper
  7. Burn the British : Toasted English muffin
  8. Pin a rose on it : Add onion to the order
  9. Break it and shake it : Add an egg to a drink
  10. Million on a platter : A plate of baked beans
  11. Wreck ‘em : Scrambled egg
  12. Frog sticks : French fries
  13. Wax : American cheese
  14. Cow paste : Butter
  15. Hold the hail : No ice
  16. Life preservers : Doughnuts
  17. A splash of red noise : a bowl of tomato soup
  18. Houseboat : A banana split
  19. Creep : Draft beer
  20. Keep off the grass : No lettuce
  21. First lady : Spare ribs
  22. Breath : Onion
  23. Hockey puck : A well-done hamburger
  24. Spot with a twist : A cup of tea with lemon
  25. Sea dust : Salt
  26. Paint a Bow-Wow red : a hot dog with ketchup
  27. Throw it in the mud : Add chocolate syrup
  28. Moo juice : Milk
  29. Bucket of cold mud : bowl of chocolate ice cream
  30. Bossy in a bowl : Beef stew

Well that’s all I can think of at the moment. There are hundreds out there and I am pretty sure you know quite a few. Please take a moment and share some with us. Diner lingo has been around for years and it should certainly be something passed from generation to generation. If nothing comes out of it, we can at least sound “cooler” than the one sitting next to us. ;-)
