That’s exactly what one college graduate ended up doing. Trina Thompson who hasn’t found a job since her graduation in April decided to sue the college she graduated from. The Monroe College recently received a surprise when they found out that there former student was suing them for $70,000. The reason Trina ended up suing the college is because according to her, she hasn’t been able to find a job since her graduation and it seems all the money put into her education was a loss of time and money. After the lawsuit was filed this is what Gary Axelbank, school’s spokeperson had to say
The lawsuit is completely without merit. The college prides itself on the excellent career-development support that we provide to each of our students, and this case does not deserve further consideration.
I agree that not finding a job can be very frustrating, especially when you are in the brink of losing your home. However, does this really mean suing the college that you graduated from is an answer? I don’t think so. The reason being that at this point in time, due to all the frustration and everything else, it may seem like the money spent on education was a waste, however, one needs to remember that once you have a degree it lasts a life time. With a degree in hand, opportunities may not come right away. But having education to back you up is certainly something that will bring many more in near future and hopefully set one apart from the rest.
I think this lawsuit is completely out of merit. I can understand Trina’s frustration and worries but suing the college and asking for money spent on education isn’t really ethical to do either. So, if the college decides to pay her does that mean the college can take her graduate degree and claim that she never graduated? That’s not possible. I just fail to see any logical reasoning behind this lawsuit.
Would love to hear your take on it.

Trina Thompson should have thought about this long and hard before filing a lawsuit. Who will hire her now? I wouldn’t hire someone that is so quick to blame her college for her inability to find a job.
Personal brand management at it finest!
IMHO, I think Trina’s future job prospects are looking more grim than ever. Just posted my take on this at Examiner.com: bit.ly/dckbH
This seems absolutely absurd to me. All a college can do is help to prepare you…in the end it’s all on YOU though. This is the most entitled thing that I have heard regarding a job search. Maybe more time should be spent bettering oneself or getting feedback on interview techniques.
Also…between April and August she wouldn’t have made 70k anyway. So aside from that being completely unrealistic, I hope this never gets off the ground. If the school pays out, I will be shocked.
Oddly enough, she did get a job offer! I would think this type of action would cause employers to steer clear of her. It didn’t. She received an offer from The Ski Channel. I vented about it on my latest blog post. Unbelieveable!
While she is at it, why not sue her parents for not bestowing her with some common sense and self respect?
