I do not think a credit check should be done to determine if the employer is willing to offer a person a good job.
@erin : credit checks are usually done by the employers to determine whether or not to offer the person a job. Employers usually hesitate when it comes to offering jobs to someone with a bad credit. We will be covering more on this topic in our upcoming posts.
Credit checks are a great idea – I think it’s fair to say that people who are organized and responsible take great care to ensure that their credit history is sound. Obviously, someone should have an opportunity to explain a blemish on their credit record – for instance, if a spouse did something to cause it or if something happened many years ago. But I think it’s a valuable tool, and employers should have the right to use it.

Credit checks should not be used for employment purposes.
As a Senior Recruiter I don’t think a credit check is mandatory for every position. If you are involved in certain areas of business it might be appropriate such as investment Consulting, banking, finance etc.

It’s none of their business and it’s not a correct measurement of if the person is honest or now. Circumstances are different with everyone. Some people get in a bind and ruin their credit score from no fault of their own. Some may have medical expenses that come up that they can’t pay and that starts the ball rolling and ruins it.
I believe employment should not be based on a persons credit score. There can be reasons behind that. Both the things can not be compared. You can not rate someone’s efficiency in their work by measuring credit score.

70+ Million Americans Suffered “Bad Credit” (Previous to July ’09) long before the full economic collapse – that’s more than 1/3 of the entire population between 20 and 75 years old
379,000 Bankruptcies Filed Q1, 2010, (17 percent increase over Q1, 2009 during a year in a year which they soared upward by 32%)
35% Increase in Foreclosures and a 16% Increase in Foreclosure Notices Q1, 2010 (over Q1, 2009) and 1 in every 4 Homes in America are at least 10+ % “underwater.”
In survey after survey, including a recent MSNBC survey, more than 90 percent of Americans say that workplace discrimination based upon someone’s personal credit report is wrong and should be illegal. ZERO statistical evidence exists to tie bad credit reports to fraud! It’s already illegal in 3 states and HR3149: The Equal Employment for All Act would make it illegal in every state, but most Americans don’t even know the legislation exists. Please support the overwhelming will of the people and the rights of highly qualified American workers to compete on a level playing field during this horrible economic disaster.
