Before we get started we want you to know that these images have nothing to do with April Fool’s Day. They weren’t created to fool someone for one day and yell “Happy April Fool’s Day” at the top of their lungs. Fooling someone for a day can’t be that hard; fooling people for years to come, now that’s some work. Here are 5 images from the past that fooled many for years.
Lincoln Image
You might have seen this particular picture of Lincoln hung on the walls of many schools and probably political offices. This image of Abraham Lincoln is fake and and the head shot was pasted onto a portrait of a Southern Leader, John Callhoun. Many have been fooled and made to think it was Abraham Lincoln and many will for years to come.

World War I
There are not very many pictures that give us a glimpse of World War I. A model maker, Wesley David Archer took this opportunity and created model planes and superimposed plane images onto aerial background. These images were published in “Death in the Air: The War Diary and Photographs of a Flying Corps Pilot” and many were fooled for years until the hoax was discovered in 1984.

Baby Hitler
In 1933 a picture of a baby was mistaken by many as the Baby Adolf Hitler. The picture circulated in newspapers and many people thought it was the actual baby Hitler. The baby shown in the picture was the son of a Ohio resident. Someone had changed the hair color, made other minor touches and distributed the image as baby Adolf Hitler. People including news publications were fooled by this picture for years.

Sea Monster
The image you are about to see below fooled people for many years. This image was thought to be the best evidence of the existence of a sea monster. The person who took this image didn’t want to be associated with the image (for obvious reasons), therefore, it was known as “The Surgeon’s Photo.” The image was actually a model serpent that was attached to a toy submarine. This image fooled everyone for decades.

Barbarity In Mexico
Sometimes to fool someone with an image, you don’t really have to work that hard. Just take the image and put a creative caption, voila! The image you see below was taken in British Honduras where the children were playing happily. The photographer asked them to raise their hands in order to take better pictures. When the photograph released the picture, it carried the following caption “As proof of an almost unbelievable state of barbarity found to exist in Mexico, Russell Hastings Milward, an English traveler, fellow of the Royal Geographic Society of London, has produced the photograph here shown. Parents of these children, Mr. Milward states, had been killed by Federal soldiers. The children were driven into the water, forced to hold their hands above their heads, and shot in the back. Note the terror in the face of one child, who has turned to stare at her executioners.” Fooled for decades.
April Fool’s day pranks are sometimes amazing but pretty much anything that seems suspicious is declared a hoax on this particular day. The above hoaxes weren’t meant to fool people on April Fool’s day, they were meant to fool people for years and they did.
Your turn to share some cool hoaxes or April Fool’s Day pranks with us.

That is one darn ugly baby—regardless of who it is! I would be more frightened of the baby than the sea monster!
@Beauticontrol each baby is the most beautiful child to their parents Besides, as someone who is running a site that boasts the badge “woman helping others,” comments like these might come to haunt you. Just saying.
The only one of these I had seen before is the see monster one…although I suppose I might have seen a couple fo the others without giving them a second thought.
hhahahahaha jesus! you are hard-core admin.. Good research, great response.
HA!
Beauticontrol, have any intelligent response to that?
Admin, while the baby may indeed be a beautiful child to his parents, to a casual observer, he’s *REALLY* fugly.
@Nosferatu5 Well, that depends how you look at babies. I think all babies are adorable just cause of their innocence. I guess we have started seeing babies and children the way society usually looks upon adults – anyone who appeals to the eye is good and everyone else is bad.
I use to love the loch ness monster as a child. It’s gotta be there…it’s just gotta!!!
Interesting piece. I’d have thought a mention of http://www.snopes.com/ would have be obligatory.
