The Perfect Applicant: The Graduates of The School Of Hard Knocks

So you have been laid off from your current job and thinking of a way to put food on the table yet again. Well, welcome to the school of hard knocks! You know the saying “What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger,” apply that theory and keep striving for it. Although the economy is bad and the job market has been plummeting down like there is no tomorrow, there are opportunities that lay ahead of you. The only thing that might stop one depends on whether or not you have graduated from the school of hard knocks.

Although formal education is quite important, your resume and corporate background alone will not help you pave the path to success. Its the drive, the motivation and the desire to succeed that will lead you to the destination. This is why we say a perfect applicant is the graduate of the school of hard knocks, simply because if you have had your share of kicks and spits, you only get stronger given you have the desire.

So what does graduating from School of Hard knocks take? To graduate from the School of Hard Knocks you need to take 30 credits. And before we mention the courses please note that all credits are paid in time and desire and not cash.

SHK (School Of Hard Knocks) Courses

SHK 104 – Rule Breakonomics (4 Credits)

If you want to take charge of your life and career consider breaking the rules. When we say breaking the rules we don’t mean it in a way that would cause any legal complications or anything. To put it simply – step out of the box. The saying “do not rock the boat” could have been effective back in the 19th century but today people demand changes. So go ahead and rock the boat, step out of the box and be creative. Break those barriers and step out and show what you’ve got and what you can do.

SHK 109 – Painology (3 Credits)

One of the most effective sayings of all time stays true to date – no pain, no gain. Painology is all about going through the tough times without giving up hope and desire. The current market situation is tough and jobs are scarce. But people who have managed to pass Painology courses have opened their own businesses during these tough times. Go ahead and grab a copy of Entrepreneur and look at the young folks on there. They have turned around the tough economy to favor them. We all go through times that aren’t in our favor and trust me we all go through them quite a few times. If you take the painology class seriously you will know that there is an “A” grade coming your way cause you will gain what you are reaching out for.

SHK 206 – Making Bad Decision (4 Credits)

This is one of the most important courses and must be taken. Most people fail to make decisions because they fear that their decision might be a bad one. Let me tell you one thing, if you are not making bad decisions you are not making enough decisions. Life is all about trial and error. Think of it this way – when we took our very first step as a toddler we fell. Had we thought that was a bad decision at that point and never gave walking another try, we would have to crawl to go to a public restroom. It was a good decision to give it another try, wasn’t it? Exactly! Don’t fear bad decisions, fear not making enough.

SHK 278 – How To Get Rewarded (3 Credits)

So you have worked hard to achieve something and no matter how hard you try it just doesn’t seem like its coming your way? This course will help you learn that although you might not reach the end goal you have already been rewarded. Remember one thing – we might not always reach the goals we shoot for but we always get rewarded. The hard work that you put in to achieve your dreams in itself is a reward. This course helps you realize the fact that hard work isn’t just the time and effort you put in. It is a reward in itself in the form of experience and knowledge which you will be able to utilize in one way or the other.

SHK 301 – Learning To Go A Little Crazy (4 Credits)

This is one of the very critical courses. There are two types of craziness – the good crazy that works for you and the bad crazy that works against you. This course teaches you how to embrace the good craziness. A lot of times people tend to be shy when trying something new, something that might make people go a little nutty.  But guess what? People love craziness. Don’t hold your ideas back, let it out and make it a little crazy. Here is an example of going crazy – When half.com was getting ready to launch, they went crazy and changed the name of an entire town to half.com. This put them on the map of US, literally. Was it crazy? You bet it was but it was one of the most innovtive marketing tactics as well. Going a little crazy once in a while with your ideas is a good thing. This course will teach you how to go a little crazy.

SHK 372 – Self Mentoring (5 Credits)

This is one of those course that some are never able to finish and the ones that do always excel. Self mentoring is one of the hardest course in SHK. Most people tend to listen to other and ignore their inner mentor. This course will allow you to learn to listen to your inner self. We as humans make mistakes, it is inevitable and due to this one reason the advice offered by someone else might be as much as yours. Its time to trust your instinct and jump in to see what lies ahead. Self mentoring is one of the most valued courses in SHK.

SHK 400 – Choosing The Right Crowd (4 Credits)

Chance makes our parents, but choice makes our friends. ~ Jacques Delille

Life is about choosing right strategy, right path and surrounding yourself among right people. This course helps you choose the right crowd and turn acquaintances into friends. Associate yourself with successful people and you will succeed. Ambition is contagious. If you surround yourself among people that are willing to work for what they believe in you will be exposed to this virus. This course will help you choose the right people and know which acquaintances are worth turning into friends and the one’s that are better left as acquaintances.

SHK 405 – Living It Up (3 Credits)

We are pretty sure most of you are already doing this but some tend to forget. This course reminds you once again that you live once. Make the most out of it. The School of Hard Knocks is dedicated to helping you achieve the goals and make the most out of troubling times. But it also stresses in the fun and joy of life that cannot be ignored during tough times. This course guides you in the proper direction as to enjoy life.

And yes SHK is not an alcohol free school. During this last course students are allowed to drink their choice of alcohol in moderation, party and have a good time with the faculty members.

We are sure most of you have aready graduated from this prestigious school. If you haven’t we strongly recommend taking the above mentioned classes. The best part about these courses is the fact that you are the mentor and the student. Go ahead and give it a try. Trust us, you will be a winner ;-) .

  1. Self-Determinism 101

In this class, you will learn that it’s your attitude and determination — not your parents’ mistakes or your childhood circumstances — that define the brightness of your future. Successful students will look in the mirror, rather than the family scrapbook, when seeking out the person who’s ultimately responsible for their progress (or lack thereof) in life.

Bear this in mind: Oprah’s childhood was by all counts horrific, yet she didn’t let her early circumstances stop her in attaining her dreams. What a shame it would be for all of us if she had!

Thanks for this great list. Despite inclusion of the occasional cliché (“what doesn’t kill you”, “outside the box” etc. which usually make me cringe in general), I really enjoyed this take on experience as valuable. Thanks!

    I tweeted about it:

  3. Enjoyed your post immensely. Never giving up and keeping your eye on the prize. I wish more applicants had more drive + motivation + desire to succeed = key ingrediants for success.
    Thanks for the read!
